4) Writing-Think about what message you would like to convey through your narrative and how you might rewrite it to show that message.

As you read, allow yourself to have thoughts about characters, their relationships, the plot, whatever it might be.  At the end of reading, take your post-its and ask yourselves, "Do these connect in some way?  Can i make something bigger out of them?"  Then see if you can push yourself to write about something more complex out of those little pieces.
As you look across your post-its, you can ask yourself:
-What is the character's central problem in this scene? How does that relate to the theme of this story?
-Which of the details about ______ seems most important to the reader's understanding of him or her?  How do those details help convey a theme?
-Which detail in this scene best helps to show a theme in the story?
-What moments seem most important to this story?  Do they reveal something about what this story is really about?

Worth a deeper look:

Test scores at this school are about the same as the state average, though still below the top-performing schools in the state. Because test scores in some states are so low, many students at this school may not be performing at grade level.
