I Survived High-School

"Welcome to White Oak High School, home of the Vikings." The speech given to any fool unfortunate enough to enroll in this school.

My first high school had an unhospitable atmosphere. It had the distinction of having the highest murder rate of any school in North Carolina.

The school's undercover narcotics officer, Randy, was killed in the faculty parking lot. A car pulled up, and a black tinted window rolled down. The passenger in the back seat shot him once in the head with a handgun, then the car sped away. Randy was killed instantly, and the people in the car were never caught.

I tried never to go anywhere on-campus alone. I usually walked with two or three girls that I knew I could trust.

My father taught me to fight. He took to Camp Lejeune with him and had me watch the Marines training for hand to hand combat. He taught me how to fight with a knife, to shoot a gun and to find the weakness in any opponent I might have. The skills I learned helped me defend myself and my friends from the perils that awaited us.

Seven people were killed at White Oak in the year and a half I was there. I knew three of them. One was a friend.

"Because of our students wide ethnic background, they have learned compassion for their fellow students. Sixty-two percent of our student body is made is made up of minorities, yet we do not experience the racial tension found at other schools. Our students live in harmony with each other. They have respect for the culture of others. Our students are an example for other high schools." A quote from Tom Pittman, a member of the school board. This was his opening for a speech given to the PTA after some parents expressed concern over the violence reported by their children.

Nikki, April and Mark held me against the wall. I could only watch as Kisha and Lina beat up Shantelle. They broke her wrist. They said she was a disgrace to the black people of the world.

Except for the main entrance, which was only used by guests (it was off limits to students), all of the doors to the building had metal detectors.

Essay on Personal Narrative - Graduation Day - Graduation Day It was one of the most exciting and nerve racking days of our lives. Although we were finally leaving high school, the feeling of being unsure didn’t go away. The whole day was full of practicing for the big moment when the entire class graduated on to a new beginning. All the girls wore shiny bright red robes and the guys were dressed in a shiny navy blue. Standing there, I had no idea what to expect. Some things I were aware of, my friends were leaving and we wouldn’t be the same friends anymore....   [tags: Personal Narratives]1132 words

Free Personal Narratives: I Am a Writer Essay - I Am a Writer Writing for me has not always come so easily. The first essay I wrote, in French, was about my second grade teacher Mr. Bernard. I was utterly enamored by Mr. Bernard, with his slim black leather tie, pinstriped shirt, styled hair and scent of smoke and cologne. He was my hero; I even took a picture of myself dressed up like him and gave it to him. My first experience with writing was in cursive due to my upbringing in Belgium. When our family moved to the US, I was the only third grader learning how to print and properly cross his T's....   [tags: Free Personal Narrative Writing]613 words

Essay about Free Personal Narratives: You Can’t Go Home Again - You Can’t Go Home Again I sat in my friend's Oldsmobile with her three year old in the car seat resting in the back, as we traveled down the street towards my former residence behind the city park. My friend, Sarah, now a MOM, was eager to show me the transformation to the front of my old home. She kept saying, that I would never believe it as we approached the house, I could only see bareness. All of the bushes, flowers, and gardens that surrounded the house were removed. The windows appeared naked without curtains or blinds to dress them....   [tags: Personal Narrative Writing]786 words

Free Personal Narratives: Another Good Day Gone Bad Essay - Another Good Day Gone Bad I slowly pressed my foot down on the accelerator as I approached the passing lane. I was tired of following the old man in his beat up, gold station wagon at 50 miles per hour. I needed to get to school. I was right behind him when I topped the hill and entered the passing zone. That's when I saw it... The warm April morning was just what I needed to refresh my mind. I had been stressed about schoolwork and was trying to keep up with all of my activities. Essay on On My Way to Medical School - On My Way to Medical School As I paced the long dim and silent halls of Floor 3, I breathed in that distinctive “hospital smell,” that one cannot even begin to describe or pinpoint. Looking down another long hall, I finally saw a doctor come out of the corridors briskly walking toward the waiting lounge where my family had been the past few hours. My grandfather anxiously stepped out to speak with the heart surgeon and for the first time in my life, I saw tears flow from my grandfather’s pale and tired face....   [tags: Personal Narratives]1217 words

Educational History and Background Essay - Educational History and Background I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I learned everything I needed to know there. Everything that has to do with life that is. I started my education there and I will continue it where ever I go. My educational background was just as normal and fun like any other kids. But I was the unique child that made my education different and more enjoyable. My learning process has five processes: elementary, middle, high school, college, and the future. Elementary school started out as a bore but moved on to eventually being fun and enjoyable....   [tags: Personal Narratives Education School Essays]967 words

Leaving for College - A Heartbreaking and Bittersweet Experience Essay - Leaving for College - A Heartbreaking and Bittersweet Experience “Here’s to the nights we felt alive, here’s to the tears we knew you’d cry, here’s to goodbye, tomorrow’s gonna come too soon.” - Eve 6. I’ve heard this song many times before, but it took me so long to finally understand the real meaning behind it. Peculiar Institutions Reconfiguring Notions of Political Participation Through the Narratives of Hannah Crafts and Harriet Jacobs - Peculiar Institutions Reconfiguring Notions of Political Participation Through the Narratives of Hannah Crafts and Harriet Jacobs In her narrative Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Harriet Jacobs says, “If the secret memoirs of many members of Congress should be published, curious details would be unfolded” (142). Jacobs here, and throughout her narrative, reveals herself as a political outsider in all possible senses. She does not, herself, know what stories are told in the so-called “secret memoirs” of white, male, empowered politicians....   [tags: Essays on Politics]

The Importance of Education Essay - The Importance of Education “Come on sweetie, you can do it!” These words have constantly been spoken to me ever since I was a child, and by my parents enforcing these words towards me they inspired me to achieve all that I am able too. In the Mexican culture there are many of us who yearn to learn new things yet there are many of our people who instead of lending a helping hand they thrust each other downward. With this key fact in mind I push myself to become an educated person with a degree so that I can prove to myself that if you want it you will get it....   [tags: Personal Narratives Education School Essays]1092 words

My Seminary Experience Essay examples -      For about 90- 95% of the population in my school of around 1400 people, only .00003 % of them have to wake up at 7 o’clock every school day. This is exactly 4 people in the entire school, and is the amount of people I go to seminary with every morning at 6:30. Because of this my first day of high school was a little bit different from everyone else’s first day. While the rest of the kids in the town where still fast asleep in their beds I was showering and getting ready to go to a church class held at a house a few blocks away from my high school....   [tags: Education Personal Narratives School Essays]628 words
